I carried on full time up to the day I retired, but what I did do about 6 years before I left was to save £1k a month. This meant I got used to less coming in and had an additional pot for when I retired. It’s been 4 years now and I couldn’t imagine returning to work. I sleep better, I laugh more and no two days are the same.
My request to work reduced hours from full time to 2 or 3 days a week was rejected. I'm struggling to work full time now and had no success finding a part time job despite dozens of applications and interviews. If I don't find something by next summer I'm going to retire anyway, earlier than I really want to at 63.
I work in local government which is really flexible on working hours for most roles. I remarried and had two children in my late 40s so went to 4 days in my 50s and 2.5 days after I was 60.
I plan to do this until I’m 65,and they are nearly grown up, in 18 months time.
Hi, I love your FB page and newsletter. They are community building, inspiring, fun and thought provoking. As someone who has eased into retirement for a few years , self-employed therapist and loving it, specialized on my own demographic I find the epic retirement community life changing. My request: after your launch of the UK version of your book, can you publish one for us in the U.S. We are big fans XO
I am in South Africa. I cut back to a four-day week last year at age 60 and loved having time to explore new activities. However, my employer still seemed to expect the same output from me, which was very stressful. After a year, I would have liked to cut back to a three-day week but my employer didn't want that so I retired completely at the end of August this year. I am so glad I did! My blood pressure went down with the reduced stress, and I'm so busy doing things that I want to do! Best decision! I may still pick up some part time work at some stage but it will be on my terms because I don't need the money. My husband is a financial advisor so he made sure that I always saved towards my retirement.
